By Rachael Bird, Myotherapist
As myotherapists, we teach you beneficial exercises that are safe for you to complete based on our assessment of your pain or injury. We pick the exercises that will help you the most, and that you will be likely to be able to do fairly easily.
What happens if you don't do the exercises we prescribe for you?
Well, if a personal trainer teaches you how to do sit ups but you don't actually do the sit ups, you don't get great abs.
If we teach you helpful exercises but you don't use them, you won't get the benefit of strength, stability and reduced pain.
If you don't use the exercises we suggest, any or all of the following results could occur:
It's essential to communicate openly with your myotherapist if you're having difficulty with your exercise program or if you're unsure about how to perform the exercises correctly. We can adjust the program, provide additional guidance, or offer alternative exercises to better suit your needs. Consistency in following our recommendations is crucial for achieving the best possible results from myotherapy treatment.

If you don't use the exercises we suggest, any or all of the following results could occur:
- Slower recovery: Myotherapists often prescribe specific exercises to help you recover from musculoskeletal issues or injuries. If you don't do these exercises, your recovery may take longer, and you may not achieve the desired outcomes as quickly.
- Persistent pain or discomfort: Failing to perform prescribed exercises can lead to persistent pain, discomfort, or limited mobility in the affected area. The exercises are designed to address specific issues and improve your condition, so neglecting them can hinder progress.
- Worsening of the condition: Ignoring exercise recommendations may lead to a worsening of your condition, especially if your pain is related to stability or strength. Musculoskeletal problems can sometimes deteriorate over time if not properly managed.
- Reduced strength and flexibility: Regular exercises provided by your myotherapist are intended to improve your strength, flexibility, and overall physical function. Skipping them may result in decreased muscle strength and joint flexibility.
- Repeated sessions or prolonged treatment: If you don't follow the prescribed exercises, you may need to attend more myotherapy sessions or receive treatment for a longer duration, which can be costly and time-consuming. We recognise that some people prefer to come in for more frequent hands on care instead of exercising, but ultimately we want to see you recover well and we'd rather see you less often and know you are doing well.
- Frustration and dissatisfaction: Your myotherapist customises your exercise program to your specific needs and goals. Ignoring our recommendations can lead to you feeling frustration and dissatisfaction with the lack of progress. There is only so much that our hands on treatments can achieve if a patient is not completing the active recovery steps.
- Missed opportunities for preventive care: Myotherapists often provide exercises to prevent future musculoskeletal issues or injuries. By not doing these exercises, you miss out on the opportunity to prevent potential problems.
